Making the Short List
I have begun earnestly looking for graduate schools to apply to this summer. Parts of that process might interest my readers. (Prudence dictates reticence about the rest.)
The first question is, Which schools should I seriously consider? The American Historical Association’s website lists 192 doctoral programs in history in the United States and Canada-far too many to investigate. I have narrowed down that list to a few dozen schools by selecting any school that is in New England, that one of my professors attended, that a former classmate is attending now, or that has a good reputation in fields that interest me:
- Boston College
- Boston University
- Brandeis University
- Clark University
- Emory University
- George Mason University
- George Washington University
- Georgetown University
- Harvard University
- Northeastern University
- Princeton University
- Temple University
- Tufts University
- University of Cincinnati
- University of Connecticut
- University of Maine
- University of Maryland
- University of Massachusetts (Amherst)
- University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
- University of New Hampshire
- University of Notre Dame
- University of South Carolina
- University of Virginia
- Vanderbilt University
- Yale University
That list is still too long, but it gives me a starting point. Already I can identify a few schools that I favor. After reading about each school, I should be able to pick three or four to apply to.
If you have any suggestions, gentle reader, I welcome your comments.

Here is a link to the only colonial guy I’ve come into personal contact with at Temple. There are a couple others, but no Puritan specialists.

I feel morally obligated to put in a plug for my own soon-to-be alma mater Notre Dame (near-redundancy noted!). Visit the school before ruling it out. It’s a very hard place to not fall in love with after you’ve seen it. Plus, I’m not sure where else you can expect to find such a remarkable collection of history faculty. Not only are they top-notch academically, they will invite you into their homes and invite you to not only know things, but care about them.
