This spring, several graduate students from Bob Jones University will present papers at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Historical Association:

  • Abby Garland, “‘The Most Bold and Daring Act of the Age’: A History of the U.S.S. Philadelphia, 1798–1804″
  • Kellen Funk, “‘Let Not Man Put Asunder’: South Carolina’s Law of Divorce, 1895–1950″
  • Julie Phillips, “Changing Times: Occupational Change and Temporal Perception among Old Order Amish”
  • David Woodworth, “Arguing Time: A Look at Two Philosophic Views of Time in the Clarke-Leibniz Debate”
  • Lincoln Austin Mullen, “‘Six Days Shalt Thou Labor’: Work, Sabbath Observance, and Cultural Conversion in John Eliot’s Mission to the Indians”

Kellen and Abby will be presenting their papers as a part of different panels. Julie, David, and I will form our own panel, in which Dr. Brenda Schoolfield will be the chair and Dr. Cheryl Wells will be the commentator.

In one respect, these presentations will continue a tradition that began last year, when several students and faculty presented papers. On the other hand, BJU students and faculty have probably been presenting at SCHA for years.

If you can be in Columbia on 1 March 2008, come and join us.
