Having given up my resolution not to tinker, I have redesigned the blog yet again. This design is based on the website Finding America by Dave Lester, a web developer at the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. Dave granted me permission to adapt his design. I liked how his design emphasized the content by placing the posts at the top. It also left room for sidebar content and for an adequate but unobtrusive menu. Thanks, Dave. [Read more »]
Yesterday I received the finale of my semester–my printed grade report card. First semester is now officially closed; I have turned in all of my grades, and I have received all of my grades. I was very happy to receive a high grade in Twentieth-Century American Literature on my paper, titled “‘By Their Fruits Ye Shall Know Them’: Defending the Puritans Against Thomas Pynchon.” Pynchon is a far cry from my normal reading, but I determined that because I didn’t like postmodernism that much, I was going to go above and beyond my normal work in order to understand the subject as well as I possibly could. I took a very non-postmodern approach in my paper, but I think it worked. [Read more »]

No, not the video game, with which I am completely unfamiliar. This afternoon, there was a beautiful halo around the sun–not just parhelia (otherwise known as “sundogs”), but an actual, full halo. The time of the semester has come when I can give serious thought to other reading. My papers and thesis are handed in, only a project here and a quiz there remain. Though I am glad for the assigned readings during the semester, most of which I can pick anyway, I always anticipate the chance to accomplish some serious reading over the break. [Read more »]
