I received in the mail my first solicitation to purchase life insurance. I have drawn two inferences from that piece of mail: (1) at least one person thinks that I have a life and that it is worth insuring; (2) it is time to start thinking about death.
For Dr. Sidwell’s class “Westward Movement in America,” I read Peter Cartwright’s autobiography. The autobiography provides a valuable perspective into frontier religion, though Cartwright’s perspective is rather biased. The autobiography tells many stories, so it is easy to read. Kellen described it as a written version of a grandfather telling yarns.
The following paper summarizes the Cartwright’s influence and the emphases of his preaching. The paper is rather rough, and the only source that I used was Cartwright’s autobiography, so don’t expect too much from it.
