Carrel, Not Cubicle
After a diligent search for a new location, I have established my office for the semester in the Periodicals Room of the Mack Library. This new office has several advantages that recommend it.
- My chosen carrel is less than ten yards from the nearest microfiche reader and only fifteen yards or so from the American Antiquarian Society’s Early American Imprints. Proximity to my sources will be very helpful.
- This carrel is the only one in the entire periodicals room that is within the distance of a power cord to an electrical outlet.
- This particular group of carrels is right next to a group of armchairs, useful for long stints of reading.
In short, to modify the words of the Bard:
This [carrel] hath a pleasant seat; the air
Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself
Unto our gentle senses.
Along with the new office, I have added a new category: “Researching.” Here I’ll put everything that has anything to do with the process of putting a paper together. Thus I begin the senior history paper, which is due in three months, thirteen days, six hours, and change.

I think I know why you chose the periodicals room. Weren’t you the one that told me * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *? (Forgive me for taking liberty with your exact words.)
[Note from LAM: Forgive me for taking liberty with Audrey's exact words, but the information that she shared, though accurate, is too sensitive for my reading public.]

Riiiight.
I know we are all excited to hear that you found yourself a cubicle…and yes, Im calling it a cubicle. It was such a interesting post:)p
Btw, I don’t know what to put up for a picture…and no Im not putting one of myself with a “snotty look” as you call it. So if you find one…email it to me. Otherwise, you will still be seeing that ugly thing.

Ah, yes! I remember the days of staking out a spot in the University library. I also remember, however, that every once in a while some uninformed student would come along and actually sit down in my place of study. Perhaps such atrocities only happen at secular universities?
I believe you have made a good choice in cubicle/carrel over table. In my day, I preferred a table, but that leaves you open to distractions. Case in point–in the fall of my senior year some guy named Dave started joining me at the library, and at my table. He said he was there to “study”, but I figured out pretty quickly that studying wasn’t one of his strong points. I sure did marry him anyway, though, and you know what? By the time he enrolled in grad school, he really had that studying thing down pat.
And Morgan…I love your gravitar!! Very nice choice.

If studying at a table worked for Mrs. D., maybe I should move . . .

Studying! - that’s what I’ve been forgetting. I’ve been here 4 years and knew I was missing something.

Nah, it’s pretty much overrated. Save it for law school. Believe it or not, you’ll need it there.
